The Place I Come From

They say where I’m from is worlds apart from where I live now,

but they’re similar in heart,

So I’ll tell you a story, my journey to peace

Then tell me of all the difference you see.

I come from a place where the sun always shines,

But the will of the people, it changes with time,

I come from a place where we fought for our freedom,

Black fought the White to build a new kingdom,

Still in this place the grass is not greener,

Death is less violent but she is no stranger

For where I come from they say is corrupt,

The money won’t flow, the flood gates are shut,

So now in this place the people are starving,

The wealthy are fed, the poor just surviving,

We march in rebellion for freedom for power,

But cries lay waste, at great heights hearts sour,

And in this place ones like me are silenced,

The powers that be they hush us with violence,

There are very few words my tongue can speak

For my lips, they chain my hands to my feet,

And if you do wrong blood is spilled by police

But they’ll hold no secrets, you’ll know they took me,

So to protect myself, to pray and find peace

I fled to a place where they promise we’re free.

I moved to a new kingdom for a better life,

They say here we’ll prosper, they say we’ll survive

For in this new place they say grass is greener,

But there is still death, my people still meet her,

And just like lost kingdoms, the children are starving

While the wealthy are fed and rulers are thriving,

And their people they cry, they plead and they beg

But guilt knows no master with jewels on his head,

Again, I live in a place where Black is not free

My men may reach up but still fall from the tree,

But unlike where I am from, here we know no silence,

We’ll march till we bleed and stand in defiance,

But be warned in this place of the hands of police

Who steal Black shadows and pray you don’t see,

Again my people suffer, my people die

And it’s the fault of the king not of you or of I.

I travelled great distances for this new life,

Pain may be different, but here it’s alive

For where I come from, rulers take their cut,

But where I live now feels just as corrupt,

But still they insist that this place is good,

That rulers they reign the way that they should,

But tell me now the difference you see

In the place I come from and the place I now breathe.
